The World Cycling Alliance

Who We Are

The World Cycling alliance is a diverse mix of global bicycle advocacy leaders who represent expert, time-tested organizations on each continent.

The work of the World Cycling Alliance is global. One key area of focus is partnerships with influential organizations that operate worldwide, such as the United Nations, World Bank and Organisation for International Cooperation and Development. Another priority is sharing best practices, research, and statistics with groups working to improve bicycling all around the world.

In 2015, the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development goals. Bicycling helps meet nearly every one of them. Bicycling is a cost-effective, quick-to-implement, versatile and contemporary solution that helps individuals, families, communities, nations, and the planet.

Strong, professional advocacy has spurred the development and growth of bicycling in many cities, nations, and regions. But, on a global scale, one key element has been missing:  A unified, effective non-government voice that connects and promotes the best efforts around the world.

Our Mission

Our mission is to:

1. Provide a strong, unified, global non-government voice for bicycling transportation and recreation. The WCA will advocate for bicycling with the United Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, International Transport Forum, World Bank and other leading international groups.

2. The WCA will support the worldwide exchange and delivery of bicycling knowledge, expertise and best practice community based interventions, as well as building cooperation among cycling associations and organisations globally.

Our History and Structure

The World Cycling Alliance concept was introduced by the leaders of the European Cyclists Federation at the 2014 Velo-City Global Conference in Adelaide, Australia. They recognized that true global coordination and promotion of bicycle of advocacy efforts is essential to helping bicycling grow and thrive as a mobility solution that also produces other important societal benefits. A mission statement was created and endorsed: To promote cycling as a mode of transport (including leisure and touristic cycling) for the benefit of people worldwide.

A steering board was established with representatives from each continental region. This board has worked to develop the organisation’s mission, structure, and development plan. The steering board stepped aside in June 2018 and was replaced by a diverse set of directors who provide worldwide leadership and representation. See the full list of directors here.

The World Cycling Alliance is designed to be a dynamic organization that operates swiftly and efficiently on a clear list of priority projects.
